Chloe Zhao and her work Nomadland won the 93rd Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress on April 26, 2021. Ms. Zhao is the daughter of BHR's Venture Partner Mr. Zhao Yuji.
Chloe Zhao is the third Asian director to win an Oscar for Best Director after Ang Lee and Bong Joon-ho. She is also the first Asian female to win the Best Director Award and the second woman to win this honor in the 93-year history of the Oscars.
The movie Nomadland tells the story of a group of marginalized people from the Midwestern United States living on the road after the 2008 financial crisis. The story is touched by many people. Before winning the Oscars, the movie also won the 77th Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion Award, the 78th Golden Globe Award, and the 74th British Academy Film Award among many other awards.
